Most parents of children with Autism have heard the anecdote by Emily Perl Kingsly. She compares planning for her much wanted child to planning for a trip of a lifetime: a trip to Italy. Rather than going to Italy, she wound up in Holland. Not a bad place, but not what she planned and not where she wanted to go. She eventually found Holland to be an interesting place and a beautiful place in its own right.

We, too, ended up deplaning in unfamiliar territory. Here is the story of our Unplanned Trip to Holland.

...Besides "Annoying?"

So, Ted has a new "thing." I am calling it a "thing" because I don't know if it is a stim or just a "thing" he does to be weird. I have never heard of anyone else doing this, but that doesn't really mean much. Therefore, I am putting this out there to All the Cool Kids. Do you know of anyone who does this:

When I am talking, Ted talks at the same time. More of a mumbling - imagine someone (me, maybe) trying to sing along to a song without knowing all (or any) of the words: "mghsdf mdf mewpd". Until I say the last word in my sentence. Then Ted says that very quickly after I spit it out. Kinda like this:

Me: "Ted, please stop talking."
Ted: "tdfd, sdfese sdf fdhTALKING."

But at the same time as me.

All day long.

And, he does it throughout a TV program.

And when his therapist talks.

Anyone else experience this? Anyone else know what to call it...besides annoying?

  1. Joey does the same thing a lot of the time. He hasn't done it in awhile so now that I've read this and commented.....I'm thinking it's going to start happening again. Thanks for that. :)

  2. My 3 year old son kinda does this lately. He's supposedly my NT kid...

I am like you, Thinking he might be doing it just to be annoying... but I'm not certain.

  3. Tootles is doing the same thing because I've been practicing my opening statement and he's mad so he's talking over me to be louder - drown me out- and it.is.annoying!!!! So far, I've just dealt with it by telling him to knock it off. It has been working - temporarily - I can't do the time outs now with the fits that attach.... He's gonna be a wild child for the next month! Maybe he and Ted can start chatting on Skype. That might be pretty amusing... :) (Miss u girl!)

  5. That's hilarious, but I can see it getting confusing. It's nice to know other ppl's kids have funny quirks too :)

  6. GL doesn't do that exactly, but he will often come into the room mumbling, walk up to me like he wants to tell me something, and continue mumbling just softly enough that I can't quite make out the words. If I ask him what he said or what he wants, he says, "Never mind," or "I was talking to myself!" (In a tone that suggests, "How dare you interrupt me!") If I don't ask what he's saying, he'll continue mumbling until I ask.

The few times I have been able to pick out some of the words, he was asking for something. He apparently thought if I didn't hear the question, I couldn't say no. He seems to do this a lot when he's asking for something he's not sure he can have. I'd be happy to let him have many of the things he asks for but, since his requests are all over the map, I don't dare say yes without hearing the question. He thinks that's not playing fair.

  7. When GL was first learning to have conversations, he would do this ALL the time. At the time I thought as you do, "He's just doing it to be annoying" But when he finally learned to converse he explained that he thought that when he talked at the same time as Mom he was talking to Mom. He still would rather talk with background noise, usually just loud enough to make it really hard to understand what he is trying to say. Hope this helps.

  8. Oh man, another tough one. Although, in reading this without ever meeting your boys in person, the little mumbling thing sounds kind of cute. I bet he is a darling little boy... Except for the annoying part, haha. Seriously, he sounds cute, though.
